Helmets: Should they be a legal requirement for cyclists?
We’ve all grown up being told never to go cycling without wearing a helmet and, whilst we may grumble about helmet hair, we know deep down that to go without one would be plain stupid! It just makes sense as a city commuter; if you fall off your bike you'll be glad you are wearing one.
But recent concerns have come out questioning the real purpose and reliability of a helmet. The point has been raised that accidents between motorists and cyclists do not occur because of people’s choices of attire. Whilst this may be true, there is no argument in the fact that wearing a helmet is better than not, because it might help enough to prevent serious head trauma. And might is better than won't.
There’s serious talk of making it a legal requirement to wear a helmet, and the truth is that may well stop people cycling. Such is many people’s antipathy toward it.. the bigger health benefits are scant reward for a dodgy barnet; But there is always controversy and push-back when things are made a legal requirement.
Cyclists are an ever growing part of the capital's roadways... and as it is for mopeds and motorcycles riders, there is little doubt that making this a legal requirement would be a sensible step.
But let's make this about more. Let's better promote cycling safety and increase awareness of cyclists on the city roads to drivers. Let's make more cycle lanes and more cycle only roads. It's not rocket surgery... better infrastructure means a safer cycle environment.
