Vespa or eBike for commuting? A woman's perspective
So you're a woman. and you want to get to work more efficiently on 2 wheels. But which two wheels to choose? A Vespa or an eBike...
By the way this is written by me, Petra, a woman. That's me in the picture above.
We recently wrote about eBikes (here) because it looks like they will be the future of commuting. Combining what’s best about motorcycles and traditional bicycles, eBikes tend to tick every box on a commuter’s wish-list. Fast, effortless and agile commuting… what’s not to love?
However from a female commuter’s point of view (and we are a rapidly growing group on two wheels!), they may have one tiny flaw. Although eBikes trump the common objection to cycling that is “I don’t want to get sweaty°, they may not quite overcome the “I won’t be able to wear the clothes I want”. Even as big fan of commuting by bike, I can relate to the latter argument whenever I find myself awkwardly pedalling with a rolled-up skirt. I had decided that cycling in London wouldn’t stop me from dressing nicely, and yet my skirts tend to be left at the bottom of my drawer together with anything else that restricts my movement.
How about scooters then? You can sit comfortably on them while cruising through the streets. Zero restrictions on clothing, although the helmet might smudge your make-up if you wear any. Don’t let that stop you from considering a scooter though. Get to work 5 minutes earlier, and put your face on after your commute! Riding a scooter will also be handy option if you need to regularly carry lots of stuff, although a bit harder to park than an eBike.
There doesn’t seem to be a clear winner between eBikes and scooters, both being ideal for commuters who won’t compromise style over functionality. If you’re a big fan of skirts and dresses, you’ll probably find yourself happier on a scooter. Otherwise there isn’t much eBikes can’t do. The choice is yours, so which one would you choose?
We might just have the answer to this question. Lithium Cycles' newest model the Super 73 calls itself an eMotorcycle.... and it look great!!
